Alcohol Dependency Program – NHS
Alcohol dependency stands as the primary risk factor for premature death, poor health, and disability among individuals aged 15 to 49 in England. It is classified as a grade 1 carcinogen and significantly contributes to the onset of various long-term health issues, including hypertension, atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rhythm), cardiovascular disease, and stroke. Each year, millions are hospitalised due to conditions like liver disease, heart ailments, strokes, and cancers of the breast, mouth, or throat, all of which can stem from prolonged alcohol consumption.
In 2020, one-third of all alcohol-related fatalities occurred within the most disadvantaged 20% of the population, exacerbating health disparities. Those grappling with alcohol dependency and mental health issues represent some of the most at-risk individuals in our community, often facing considerable stigma and obstacles in obtaining necessary services. During the pandemic, it is estimated that there was nearly a tenfold rise in deaths linked to mental and behavioural disorders caused by alcohol. With projections suggesting that fewer than 20% of those dependent on alcohol are receiving treatment, the NHS continues to encounter late presentations through emergency services, which not only affects the individuals and their families but also increases the demand for more specialised—and expensive—care from the NHS.
Alcohol Care Teams
In alignment with the Long Term Plan, the NHS Prevention Programme has initiated the establishment of alcohol care teams (ACTs) in hospitals that have the highest need.
ACTs assist patients and their families who are suffering from the adverse effects of alcohol use disorders. They offer specialised knowledge and interventions, which include assessments, psychosocial support, advice on abstinence, relapse prevention strategies, and referrals to help patients manage or reduce their alcohol consumption.
Although they operate within hospitals, they also connect with community alcohol services and broader social support systems for patients.
ACTs are being put into action in hospitals located in the areas most severely impacted by the crisis, which will positively affect some of the most at-risk individuals in our society. Additionally, this initiative could help avert 50,000 hospital admissions annually starting from 2023/24.
The program has collaborated with 10 early implementer sites to effectively enhance staffing levels and disseminate knowledge through the newly established Alcohol Care Team Innovation and Optimisation Network (ACTION). We are currently in the process of expanding ACTs to an additional 25 hospital sites throughout England, concentrating on areas with the highest demand. By the conclusion of summer 2022, 22 sites were operational with an appropriate mix of personnel.
